Multiple Variations of the Branches of the Brachial Plexus with Bilateral Connections between Ulnar and Radial Nerves International Journal of Morphology
Ajayi,Nasirudeen Oladipupo; Lazarus,Lelika; Satyapal,Kapil Sewsaran.
During routine dissection of the upper limbs of a Caucasian male cadaver, multiple variations of the branches of the brachial plexus were observed. On the left side, the musculocutaneous nerve was absent and the muscles of the anterior compartment of the arm were innervated by the median nerve. The median nerve was also formed from three roots viz; two from the lateral and one from the medial cord of the brachial plexus. On the right side, the musculocutaneous nerve contributed a long communicating branch to the median nerve in the distal half of the arm. There were also communicating branches between the ulnar and radial nerves in both limbs at the humeral level. The co-existence of these variations appears to be unique and has not been reported in the...

Challenges and Issues in the Next Decade: A Proactive Role for Agricultural and Resource Economists AgEcon
Armbruster, Walter J..
Economic and environmental challenges in the global economy raise significant issues that require public policy and private sector attention over the next decade. Price volatility, invasive species, sustainable biofuels production, and climate change all affect our agricultural and resource base and its future. Agricultural and resource economists must provide analyses of public policy and private sector strategies based on innovative research that integrates insights across disciplinary boundaries. Proactive communication of the results to decision makers can make a difference in how these important societal issues are addressed and help to shape the future.

Communication, governance and multiply-owned Maori lands AgEcon
Barrett-Ohia, O..
Based on the premise that communication is critical to effective governance, this research examines the communication mechanisms used within Maori organisations. It is part of an objective funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology to "Define the important elements in building a governance structure to achieve alignment with the goals of owners on multiply-owned (Maori) lands". It contributes to both government and Maori agendas to accelerate Maori economic development while acknowledging the challenge in reconciling economic imperatives to increase profit with Maori cultural obligations to uphold spiritual and cultural (kaitiaki) obligations. Previous studies undertaken by AgResearch with groups other than the "traditional farmer"...

The Glue that Holds Together Supply Chain Networks AgEcon
Bavorova, Miroslava; Dautzenberg, Kirsti; Hanf, Jon Henrich.
As in the agri-food business supply chain networks are evolving in our paper we want to elaborate on managerial questions regarding them. In this context our first aim is to advance the concept of chain management by introducing a more differentiated view. Since many articles highlight the pivotal role of communication the second aim of our paper refers to the role of communication for the management of supply chain networks. Because the agri-food business is still dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises our third aim is to apply our thoughts of chain management on small and medium-sized enterprises.

Chance of psychiatric morbidity amongst recently diagnosed cancer outpatients attending a chemotherapy unit BJMBR
Chaves,A.C.; Pinto,R.N.; Lourenço,M.T.; Mari,J.J..
The prevalent rate of psychiatry morbidity amongst patients with cancer reported in various studies ranges from 5 to 50%, a variation that can be attributed to differences in sample size, the disease itself and treatment factors. The objectives of the present study were to determine the frequency of psychiatric morbidity amongst recently diagnosed cancer outpatients and try to identify which factors might be related to further psychological distress. Two hundred and eleven (70.9%) female patients and 87 (29.1%) male patients from the chemotherapy unit of the Cancer Hospital A.C. Camargo (São Paulo) completed a questionnaire that featured data on demographic, medical and treatment details. The Self Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) was administered to the...

Manager perspectives on communication and public engagement in ecological restoration project success Ecology and Society
Druschke, Caroline Gottschalk; University of Rhode Island; cgd@uri.edu; Hychka, Kristen C.; U.S. EPA, Atlantic Ecology Division; khychka@gmail.com.
We look to a particular social-ecological system, the restoration community in Rhode Island, USA and the rivers, wetlands, marshes, and estuaries they work to protect, to draw connections between communication, community involvement, and ecological restoration project success. Offering real-world examples drawn from interviews with 27 local, state, federal, and nonprofit restoration managers, we synthesize the mechanisms that managers found effective to argue that the communication employed by resource managers in each phase of the restoration process, in prioritization, implementation, and monitoring, and for garnering broad-based support, shapes the quality of public engagement in natural resources management, which, in turn, can impact the stakeholder,...

Two Rare Anatomical Variations of External Jugular Vein: an Embryological Overview International Journal of Morphology
Ghosh,Susmita; Mandal,Lopamudra; Roy,Sanchita; Bandyopadhyay,Manimay.
Human anatomy is an ocean of unending variations and its mysteries are being unravelled since ages. Knowledge of variations in the superficial veins of head and neck is essential to carry out successful surgical procedures. During routine dissection of head and neck of two middle aged male cadavers, in the Department of Anatomy, Calcutta National Medical College, Kolkata, India, we came out with some interesting venous architecture. The retromandibular vein on the left side of both the cadavers was found to be undivided and joined with the facial vein in the neck at an acute angle to form a common venous trunk at variable distances from the angle of the mandible. That trunk ultimately drained into the left subclavian vein. This might be the result of...

Protecting the Privilege of Burning Sugarcane at Harvest AgEcon
Hurly, K.M.; Lynsky, R.J.; Stranack, R.A..
The South African sugar industry burns 90% of the crop at harvest while 10% is harvested green. The trend to burn cane at harvest has increased over the past twenty years, despite growing pressure from the public and environmental legislation. This paper explores the influence that public pressure and legislation are having on the practise of burning and examines the actions that the industry has implemented in order to protect the privilege of burning sugarcane at harvest. A communication model and case studies are used to illustrate the interaction between the sugar industry, government and public role players over cane burning. Communication has proved to be a key management tool that has had to be dynamic and on going in order to engage the various...

The Role of Information in Governing the Commons: Experimental Results Ecology and Society
Janssen, Marco A.; Arizona State University, USA; Marco.Janssen@asu.edu.
The structure and dynamics of ecosystems can affect the information available to resource users on the state of the common resource and the actions of other resource users. We present results from laboratory experiments that showed that the availability of information about the actions of other participants affected the level of cooperation. Since most participants in commons dilemmas can be classified as conditional cooperators, not having full information about the actions of others may affect their decisions. When participants had more information about others, there was a more rapid reduction of the resource in the first round of the experiment. When communication was allowed, limiting the information available made it harder to develop effective...
